THE GNOMES AND ALIENS of the bird world, hummingbirds never cease to amaze. Hyper-active ballet dancers in flight, they fiercely fight off competitors for their sweet-water turf. Their bodies capture sunlight and convert it to kaleidoscopes. They flit and whir in watercolor blurs, hovering one moment — and only for a moment — then vanishing like a bullet from a gun.
And those tiny feet!
Summer is the perfect time to get chummy with the hummys, although my best images date back to a February when I communed with some very tame creatures while visiting the Sonoran desert in Arizona. That, however, was then. This summer, the hummers come to us, but only for a moment.
